The sacred sites of Kushinagar
All main sites lie within about 2 km along Buddha Marg and can be covered on foot or by e-rickshaw.
- 01
Mahaparinirvana Temple
The heart of Kushinagar. Inside lies a reclining Buddha about 6.1 m long, carved from a single block of red sandstone, shown at the moment of Mahaparinirvana. The statue was uncovered during excavations in 1876.
- 02
Parinirvana Stupa
The large stupa directly behind the temple, exposed by archaeologist A. C. L. Carlleyle in 1876. Walk the full circuit and see the ruins of ancient monasteries and votive stupas around it.
- 03
Matha Kuar Shrine
A seated Buddha about 3 m tall, carved from a single piece of blue stone from Gaya. A short walk south-west of the main temple.
- 04
Ramabhar Stupa
The cremation place of the Buddha (Mukutbandhan Chaitya), about 1.5 km east of the main temple on the Kushinagar–Deoria road. Best in the quiet of early morning or at sunset.
- 05
Wat Thai Kushinagar
A Thai-style temple complex with gardens. Opening hours for visitors are limited, so check at the gate.
- 06
Indo-Japan-Sri Lanka Temple
A circular modern temple housing an ashtadhatu (eight-metal) Buddha image.
- 07
Kushinagar Museum
Government Buddha Museum with sculptures, coins and finds from local excavations. Usually closed one day a week; confirm before visiting.
Timings and entry rules change with season and festivals. Confirm at the site or with your hotel before you go.
