Ashoka is closely associated with the early monumental history of Buddhism in South Asia. Pillars, stupas and inscriptions attributed to his reign became important evidence for the spread and public expression of Buddhist patronage.
Lumbini’s Ashoka pillar is a particularly important example because its inscription provides historical evidence associated with the site. Sanchi also preserves a major Ashokan pillar and later monuments that document the long development of the Buddhist centre.
Visitors should distinguish historical evidence from later legends and read inscriptions, archaeology and traditional narratives together.
