Buddhist Vocabulary for First-Time Visitors

Pilgrims often encounter words such as stupa, vihara, chaitya, sangha, dharma/dhamma, meditation, relic and parinirvana. The same word can carry different meanings or pronunciations across languages and Buddhist traditions.

Learning a few basic terms makes museum labels and guide explanations easier to follow. It also helps visitors understand why a monument may be both archaeological and religious at the same time.
