Kushinara was an ancient city associated with the Malla people and is identified with modern Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh. Buddhist tradition connects the place with the final passing of Gautama Buddha. The modern pilgrimage landscape includes the Mahaparinirvana Temple, the reclining Buddha image, the main stupa area and Ramabhar Stupa.
The archaeological record also tells an important modern story. Excavations in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries revealed the remains of the ancient Buddhist complex and helped establish Kushinagar as a living pilgrimage centre again.
