Nalanda Mahavihara: Buddhism, Learning and the University Tradition

Why Nalanda matters as a Buddhist monastic and scholastic centre.

Nalanda Mahavihara preserves the remains of a major monastic and scholastic institution. UNESCO describes remains dating from around the 3rd century BCE to the 13th century CE and highlights the long development of Buddhist monastic and educational traditions.

The archaeological complex includes viharas, stupas, shrines and artistic remains. Its importance goes beyond the popular label of an ancient university: it provides evidence for organised learning, monastic life, architecture and the movement of ideas.

Nalanda combines naturally with Rajgir in a Bihar Buddhist circuit and can be included in longer journeys beginning at Bodh Gaya.
