How to Visit a Buddhist Temple Respectfully

A beginner-friendly checklist for international and first-time visitors.

Before entering a temple, look for local instructions about footwear, photography, clothing and restricted areas. If no instruction is visible, observe what local visitors are doing and ask a staff member when uncertain.

Avoid sitting on or climbing monuments, railings and archaeological structures. Keep phones silent during ceremonies and do not interrupt meditation or prayer.

Different Buddhist traditions may have different customs. The purpose of this guide is not to impose one rule everywhere, but to encourage visitors to learn and follow the rules of the place they are visiting.
