Sarnath, near Varanasi, is associated with the Buddha’s first teaching and the beginning of the Buddhist community’s early public teaching tradition. UNESCO’s World Heritage documentation describes the archaeological remains and the site’s importance to Buddhist pilgrimage.
The Dhamek Stupa, archaeological zones, museum collections and surrounding monuments provide several layers of interpretation. A good visit therefore includes both outdoor remains and museum context.
Keep enough time for the journey from Varanasi and verify current opening arrangements for the monuments and museum.
