Fazilnagar also known as Pawanagar is around 20 kms east of Kushinagar on Kasya-Tamkuhi highway. Fazilnagar is a place of great importance for Jains and Buddhists both as Fazilnagar is the place where 24th (last) Jain Tirthankar Lord Mahavira attained Nirvana and it is believed that Lord Buddha, while going to Kushinagar from Vaishali stopped here to accept meals from one of his disciples named “Chund Kammara“. He ate “Sukaramaddava” (mushrooms) after which he proceeded to Kushinara (modern Kushinagar), where he attained Mahaparinirvana.

The Jain temple situated here houses a magnificent Manasthamba. There are also 4 beautiful carved idols. A festival is organized here on the day after Diwali for marking the day of salvation attained by Lord Mahavira. Another festival is organized on the day of Eid-ul-Fitra every year. Many pilgrims visit on Pipra Kanak to celebrate the Eid function.

Specially on Kartik Purnima to celebrate the ‘Nirvana Mahotsav‘, Devotees from all over the world visit this place, which is invariably preceded by much religious fanfare and a big procession.
All in all, we can say that Fazilnagar is a worth seeing place for the followers of Lord Buddha and Lord Mahavira both. Jain Temple, Fazilnagar, near Kushinagar
